Vewlix Tournament Edition Worklog 04

Final Vewlix Google SketchUp Files
Download Here
The Vewlix Package (186KB ZIP) files were created in Google SketchUp 7, a FREE download.
Update 4/19/2009: There is a new version that includes the bevels on the side and top pieces.
A note to new readers
Please take a look at the previous Worklogs for more information. A lot of questions I have been fielding have been answered in those Worklogs. I know my site is kind of hard to navigate (not loving the template I’m using), but you should be able to find everything from the home page.
Also, please take a look at my Flickr gallery, that should also answer quite a few questions.
Files Included:
Vewlix-Draft.skp (pictured left above) – A metric drawing based on UkiyOyO’s PDF of metric dimensions for his Vewlix and Necroticart’s SketchUp drawing. Uses my 32″ Sony Bravia XBR HDTV as well as 3-1/2″ speakers, but the frame and control panel are accurate.
Vewlix-Tournament-Edition.skp (pictured right above) – The final Vewlix file for my cabinet with revisions made during the building process. All dimensions are Imperial, as the cabinet is designed to be built using 3/4″ MDF.
How to use these files:
Download and start Google SketchUp.
Open your chosen file.
You can use either the Tape Measure tool or the Dimension tool to find out the dimensions of each component. If you want to create printable drawings, grab each component with the Move/Copy tool and move them apart from each other. Then using the Dimension tool to draw some dimensions on the components. Once you have the dimensions you need, either use the File->Print or File->Export->2D Graphic menu options to create blueprints.
Disclaimer:
These drawing files are based on the design of the Vewlix arcade cabinet produced by Taito Corporation, but should be considered “FAN ART.” The real Taito Vewlix arcade cabinet was not used for comparison or measurement. All dimensions are Imperial Units and were determined by the author alone. The author is not responsible for the accuracy of the drawing. The author is also not responsible for what you choose to do with the file.

AWESOME! Thank you so much. Off to Home Depot….
Hi Donovan…
This is MarkMan from Mad Catz/SD TEKKEN. I have to commend you on a job well done on your Vewlike TE cab! It looks amazing and I wish I had something like that at home!
Hey MarkMan!
Thank you so much for the kind words.
“Vewlike” — I think I like that better. When I first began designing the vinyl for the marquee, I had copied the Vewlix L design (with that scripty L) but used an F (for Fake) instead. I ended up scrapping that because I thought it wouldn’t survive the vinyl cutting, and because I didn’t really like it.
Commend whoever did the design on the faceplate of the Tournament Edition sticks. I spent at least 3 hours trying to track down the font they used for the words “Tournament Edition” and ultimately had to find something close and modify a few letters (another hour or so). It had to match perfectly you know!
Anyway, thanks again!
Oh hey!
Great work again!
Was that you on SRK asking for the font name?
Hey Donovan,
I found your page through the Build Your Own Arcade Forum. And man…that cabinet is sweet.
For a while now I’ve been building custom arcade sticks, but wanted to really build a full arcade cabinet of my own. So I started working on a Lindberg style cabinet, but decided to scrap it since I’ve found your site. I really love the Taito Vewlix style cab and have an unhealthy love for SFIV as well…so this is the perfect project for me.
Would there be any way I could contact you for some more indepth details about the cabinet construction? I don’t use facebook or any of the other social style sites.
I would greatly appreciate it.
Chris,
No problem. You (or anyone) can contact me at: donovan [at] donovanmyers [dot] com.
I am still planning to finish up the Worklog series by showing (and discussing) each component of the cabinet and how I put it together. Those are coming soon, but there just haven’t been enough hours in the day yet.
OMG! As a Mechanical Engineer, i’m jealous! Great job!
Just curious where you got the SF4 Move List stickers or jpg?
Todd,
You can get the actual Vewlix move list compartment sized Arcade move list, as well as PLAYSTATION 3 and Xbox 360 move lists on the Capcom Japan Street Fighter IV site.
I was going to translate them into English (using the manual), but it became to illegible at the size it needed to print, so I left the Japanese as-is. I really only need to see the motions anyway.
And, thanks for the kind words.
Great, great job. A project that I must do someday.
D, could I have your PSN name please? Anybody who is a fan of Kevin Smith and Street Fighter deserves a Purple Heart.
Hey Jason.
Thanks for the reminder. I added the Xbox 360 Gamertag widget to my site. My PSN ID is the same, MS3Boy. As is my Steam ID. I try to keep it pretty consistent.
I hope you are a SModcast listener!
I KNEEL BEFORE SMOD!!!
Thanks man, I’ll add you, see you online buddy.
I like it, very impressed.
awesome job man!
question: How did you make the vinyl sticker for the marquee? did you go somewhere to make the moves list etc into a sticker?
thanks!
Thanks for the kind words Sam.
I drew the vinyl sticker for the marquee in Adobe Illustrator. Then I saved it as a .AI, .EPS, and .PDF files and put on a USB key to take to my local sign shop. The guy there was about my age. He “printed” it for me right away and it cost $5.
I just printed out the moves list on normal paper and used double sided tape along the edges.
I was looking at this project via a link from shoryuken.com and someone there had posted a great solution for the bottom leg area. I know you’re not a metal fabricator (as you had stated) but you could try used office equipment such as desks or metal framed computer stands. This is probably the best way to go other than fabrication. Good luck! I’ll be following this with interest for sure.
Hey, I tried looking through the Capcom JP site for the move list, even with it translated I can’t seem to find it. you think you can upload it?
Sure, you can download them:
