Vewlix Tournament Edition Worklog 03

As you could probably see by the “Recent Photos” on the right sidebar of my site, I have completely finished the Vewlix Tournament Edition and I have much more time to actually write about it. So, picking up from last time, let’s talk about…

Materials and Cost

Material Cost
(2) 3/4″ – 49″ x 97″ MDF Sheets $52.24
(1) Box 1″ screws $5.94
(1) Box 1-1/4″ screws $5.94
(1) Box 2″ screws $6.25
(1) 1/8″ – 2′ x 4′ Hardboard Sheet $3.99
(1) .093″ – 20″ x 32″ Acrylic Sheet $9.87
(1) 1 Gallon Bucket of Drywall Joint Compound $7.29
(1) 1 Quart Clear Semi-Gloss Lacquer $11.47
(1) Quart of black paint $8.39
(1) Quart of white paint $8.39
(1) Gallon of Oil Based Killz brand primer $11.98
(1) Bottle of Wood Glue $4.39
(1) 4-Pack of Nail On Cushion Glides $1.98
(2) 25-Pack White Plastic Screw Covers $4.74
(1) 25-Pack Black Plastic Screw Covers $2.37
Total: $145.23

That’s not bad, considering that a real Vewlix L (the cheapest) costs $3,995, however we’re still missing a few key parts…

Components

Component Price
(1) 2-Pack of 4″ Infinity Car Speakers $99.99
(1) 32″ 720p Sony Bravia XBR LCD HDTV $999.99
(1) Sanus System VM200S HDTV Wall Mount $39.99
(1) Sony PLAYSTATION 3 $399.99
(1) 2.1 Computer Speakers $39.99
(2) Mad Catz Tournament Edition Fight Sticks for PLAYSTATION 3 $299.98
Total: $1,879.93

Grand Total: $2025.16

You could probably bring that total down considerably (to $625.18) if, like me, you already have some of the components, such as the TV and PLAYSTATION 3. All of the prices listed above are also retail prices, you may be able to find the products for lower prices on sale.

Think that’s still to expensive? Consider this: Adding Street Fighter IV to this “Vewlix” is $59.99. Adding it to a Taito Vewlix L: $6,807.50.

Next worklog: I will finally post the final Google SketchUp file and discuss the first part of construction.

Can’t wait for those sketchup plans!!!! Will you post only your modified plan or will you also post the original vewlix? I am building 2 as soon as you post em regardless!

I have included in my package the original Vewlix drawing that I created based on other people’s work. I’ve also included my final SketchUp drawing, as promised.

You can get another Vewlix SketchUp file from Necroticart’s forum post (mirror), which might be closer to what you are looking for.

Thanks for the feedback, it’s always motivating to have someone interested in what you’re working on.

I receive an error whenever I try to download the sketchup file on necroticart’s post… I’ve been trying that one for months! I grabbed your file anyway since as far as I can tell, he never went through with the build whereas you did.

Love your cab. I’m also interested to check out Necorticart’s sketchup. Unfortunately, the sketchup file from Necroticart’s post isn’t working. Could you upload his sketchup file as well?

I had that same problem, I was hoping he fixed it. He sent it to me via email. I’m not sure how he’d feel about me distributing his file, so I’m not going to promote it, but…

You can download it (from my website) here.
